South Season Under way with Impressive win

South of Scotland Golfers retain Presidents Trophy

2011 Scottish Boys Champion David Wilson led a strong group of Ayrshire
golfers to Stranraer Golf Club on Sunday attempting to win the President's
Trophy back from the South of Scotland.
The format for the match was four players under 16 years of age, four under
18 and four Youths.
The match was tied at three all after the morning foursomes , with South
wins from under 16s Chris Shearman and new boy Duncan McNeil, under 18s Conor
Syme and Connor Bennewith and Youths Kyle McClung and Chris Corbett.

South of Scotland's under 16s got off to a tremendous start in the
afternoon singles, taking three and a half points from a possible four, with
wins from Robert Hughan, Matthew McCulloch, Chris Shearman and Duncan McNeil
halving his match.

Not to be outdone Ayrshire fired back with impressive wins from Euan Walker
and Calum Gorrie over Connor Bennewith and Scott Whannel respectively, Brandon
Burgess gained half a point to move the South closer to the winning line.
In the "Match of the Day" Conor Syme was two down against David Wilson
after seven holes, Syme's response was to play the next nine holes in six under
par, producing four birdies and an eagle to win 5/3 and complete the double over
David.
Next to cross the finish line with a win was Team Captain Kyle McClung and
when Danny McConnachie won his match 4/3 the South of Scotland retained the
Trophy
.
Chris Corbett fought back to record a 3 and 1 win and in the final match
which swung to and fro, Max Jackson and Louis Murray both birdied the last hole
to finish all square, with Max showing a lot of courage to hole an eight foot
putt for the half.

This was a very good result for the South of Scotland Golfers and a good
warm up before the season starts in earnest, with all the matches being played
in a friendly but competitive manner and the result being closer (7 matches
going to the last hole) than the score of eleven and a half to six and a half
suggests.

On behalf of the South of Scotland Golfers Association we thank Neville
Wright and the Staff at Stranraer Golf Club for their hospitality, everyone
agreed the course was in excellent condition, also Gillespie Leisure at
Brighouse Bay and Solway Solar Systems for their generous help throughout the
season.
Best wishes to all the boys from the South of Scotland and Ayrshire who
head to Murcar in two weeks time for the Scottish Boys Championship and to Chris
Shearman who has been selected to play for the Northern Counties of England
Select Team against Yorkshire.

 Dumfriesshire Win Drennan Salver

Originally played on a home and away basis for over 30 years, the decision was taken to make this a one day event from 2010 onwards, with the inaugural winners being Kirkcudbrightshire at Glenluce .

With each team consisting of 8 players, games are contested by a foursomes method in the morning and singles in the afternoon, each player playing against both opposing counties during the day.

This years contest was originally scheduled for 18thSeptember over Dumfries & Galloway Golf Club but had to be re-arranged due to inclement weather making the course unplayable, and was rescheduled for 16thOctober at the same venue.

Following some close games in the morning foursomes, Kirkcudbrightshire raced into an early lead winning their first two matches against Wigtownshire, but were to be caught and overhauled by Dumfriesshire who managed to win all four of their games including a hard fought one hole win by home players Martin McNae & Sean Kennedy against Wigtownshire's Scott Whannel & Jonathon McQuaker.

The afternoon singles took on a similar story with Kirkcudbrightshire brushing aside Wigtownshire by four matches to nil with some fine performances by Colin Heuchan & Ross Murray In particular, a feat Dumfriesshire could not match in their 2 ½ to 1 ½ winning margin against the same opponents, Kyle McClung earning Wigtownshire their sole victory.

This left things very finely poised, with Dumfriesshire a mere ½ point ahead of Kirkcudbrightshire with four games, between the two sides, still out on the course. However, wins for McNae, Thomson, Hamilton, and a halved last game, saw Dumfriesshire win the salver for the first time in three years by a 3 ½ point margin.

Thanks go to Dumfries & Galloway Golf Club and its members for providing courtesy of the course, and all their staff for their efforts on the day.

Congratulations to Greg Marchbank (Dumfries & County) for winning the SGU Boys Order of Merit 2011. It is a very well deserved outcome to a season that has seen Greg develop into a very competent player and great recongnition for South Junior Golf. Also worth a mention is Ian Brotherston also of the same club who will make his debut next week in the Senior Home Internationals at Woodhall Spa. Again recognition of Ian prowess in the senior ranks. Good luck to both and well done

South Matchplay results saw Kyle McClung do the double after a titanic struggle against Rory Thompson (Dumfries & Galloway) where the match required 5 extra holes before a result could be determined. Both players were to be commended on the standard of play in the final

Kyle McClung (Wigtownshire County) succesfully defended the title he won at Southerness last year.

Kyle McClung (Wigtownshire County) South Champion 2011

Scoring was  exceptionally low on a very favourable day for good scoring. Stranraer was in fine order and this was reflceted in the morning when Kyle posted a 65 to lead the field by three from Iain Thomson with Stephen Spiers and Michael Grunwell a stoke further back on 69

High calibre scoring continued in the afternoon with early starter Barry Scott setting a fierce target of 138 thanks to a best of the afternoon 67. The main challengers in the afternoon could not quite get even with Kyle whose 70 was eventually enough to see off the rest of the field. Runner up was Stephen Spiers who was left to rue a lost ball at seventeen to finish on 136 (69,67). Scott finished third and the young brigade were led home by Shamash winner Rory Thompson 142 and Danny McConnachie on 144 along with Ian Johnstone

McConnachie breaks course record to retain title

Wigtownshire County Golf Club was the venue for the South of Scotland Junior Strokeplay Championship and what a fantastic race it was for the title.
Three young men fought it out like veterans to the final few holes, 14 year old Robert Hughan was first to post a morning score of level par 70 and he held the lead for over an hour until Danny McConnachie and Liam Johnston arrived back in the clubhouse with the same score.
In the afternoon round Hughan was the first to make his move with birdies at 1, 5, 8 and 9 to reach the turn in two under par 34.
McConnachie and Johnston, who were playing together, birdied holes 7, 8 and 9 to catch Hughan at the turn.
Danny then made his move with three birdies (10 - 11 - 14) in five holes to come home in 31 - 65, to retain the title and break the course record with a 36 hole total of 135, Liam was second on 140 with Robert (a good prospect for the future) third on 142
This was a fascinating event to watch with the lead continually changing hands and a good advert for Junior golf, with a number of the younger players performing well, the youngest being 11 years old Ian Rae who played well below his handicap in both rounds, ten of the qualifiers for the Matchplay are under 16 years of age.

Birdies Galore

Newton Stewart's Scott Whannel is the 2011 Gillespie Leisure South of Scotland Matchplay Champion.
Scott rattled off 6 birdies in his six and four win over 15 year old Conor Harkness.
Conor who showed great character to come from four down in the morning round to beat David McCreadie two and one, was only 2 over par when the match finished on the 14th hole.
The Wigtownshire County Golf Course was in excellent condition when Whannel started his birdie blitz on the 2nd and he continued at the 6th 7th and 9th to reach the turn in 3 under par and be 4 up
The birdies continued at 11, 12 and finally on the 14th to produce a worthy Champion, runner up Conor never gave up when others may have thrown the towel in.

SOUTH BOYS WIN NORTHERN COUNTIES LEAGUE

The South of Scotland Juniors went to Maryport recently for their Northern Counties Federation League match in a winner take all situation.
The South had joined this league in 2008 and have been slowly raising their game to compete with their bigger neighbours, Cumbria, Durham and Northumberland in matches played home and away throughout the season.
Their Cumbrian opponents had recently finished third in the EGU English Junior Counties Finals and with the South going into the match with an under strength team this was not going to be easy.
The league was about to be decided by this one match and only a win by four clear points would be good enough for the South of Scotland to claim the NCF League Championship.

Cumbria came to the match knowing one point would be enough for them to win the title.
When the morning foursomes finished all square at two matches each the Team knew they had a mountain to climb in the eight afternoon singles.
Such is the character of the South Juniors they went out and produced a fantastic result by winning seven of the eight matches to become Northern Counties Federation League Champions.

The South also won the Friendship Trophy for the first time since 2006, this Trophy is played for annually between the two areas and was presented to the associations by Tom Bartlett.
This result shows the strength in depth the South Coaching Academy is producing through their Coaches, Joe Fergusson, Brian Gemmell and James Erskine, two of the boys were only 14 and one 15 years old, these three boys (Brandon Burgess, Connar Bennewith, Connor Syme) along with Danny McConnachie achieved 100% in their matches.

Foursome results:-
John Innes & Craig Hill lost 7/5
Ross Jack & Ryan Hyslop lost 9/7
Danny McConnachie & Connor Syme won 3/1
Connar Bennewith & Brandon Burgess won 4/2

Drennan Salver

The above event took place on Sunday 19th September 2010 at Wigtownshire County Golf Club, Glenluce.

Under a revised format wher all matches were played in the one day this new format provided the much anticipated excitement. The three teams of eight played foursomes and singles matchplay against both counties and was very much enjoyed by all who participated. Kirkcudbrightshire were the eventual winners and it is thanks to the originator of the idea Derek Douglas who dreamt up the format that it has re invigorated a championship that was struggling to get any interest. It is anticipated that it will be the format for succeeding years.

It was hard on Michael who appeared to be in control but David, who ousted the strokeplay champion Kyle McClung on route to the final,it was a fitting finale to a hard weekend. Consolation for Grunwell is that he is well positioned to retain the Order of Merit.
